The Second and Third Year of Teaching...consolidating good and working towards outstanding teaching.

A creative project to further develop pupil progression and habits of mind and how we can identify such habits in the classroom and consider their impact?

Picture
The second year presents an opportunity to develop an ongoing exploration of teaching pedagogy that particularly interests you and that you could link to the development of pupil creativity and/or the habits of mind that we are seeking to encourage and develop in Tallis students. This project should be documented in a digital format and showcased on the Supporting the Progression of Teachers at Thomas Tallis website. The project will involve a collaboration for some practitioners with the Centre for Real World Learning at the University of Winchester and the Expansive Education Network.

Furthermore opportunities will be pursued to go and visit a range of lessons with your NQT +1 or NQT +2 teaching mentor, to investigate how these habits and creativity are being encouraged across the curriculum in lessons at Tallis. This could have a research element attached to it. Do you want to turn this investigation into a blog, a website, a film or.....Do you want to focus this investigation on a particular curriculum area or focus on their implicit cross curricular nature? Time to get creative and investigate, all suggestions welcome as you further develop your teaching and learning pedagogy.

Progression on Teaching Standards. How do I develop my pedagogy to work towards outstanding?

Picture
The second year will most probably represent the phase in which the making progress on the teaching standards 2012 for you will begin to become further secure and consistently good or outstanding. The learning curve in establishing professional competence is less arduous now as you build on and extend your experiences from the NQT Year and the knowledge, attributes and skills of the Professional Teacher as exemplified in the Standards are more consistently demonstrated.

It should be possible to expect that all lessons and professional roles and responsibilities will be consistently good and working towards outstanding in all areas of the teaching competencies. This progress should be documented and show cased in the evidence gatherer document, which may reflect a focus on particular classes or projects that you are involved in during the academic year.

Professional Development. How can I make progress through INSET opportunities?

Picture
During the second year of teaching it is expected that you will  begin to play a much fuller role in contributing to the development of your curriculum area and pastoral team. You should be increasingly aware of the Self Evaluation Documents in your curriculum and pastoral areas and the Curriculum and Pastoral Action Plans which result from this along with school priorities and vision.

You should be increasingly involved in a professional dialogue with your curriculum and pastoral leaders about the extent of your responsibilities and contribution to these Action Plans. In turn this will potentially involve identifying training needs and applying for these either through support in school or on occasions from outside of school. You should begin to nurture your own curriculum vitae now and begin to document your professional roles, responsibilities and experiences as your career begins to evolve. it will be wise to document this career portfolio on an updated Curriculum vitae.

In December of the academic year the Lead Practitioner Program is often launched and you may well wish to consider this as a possible route to further your progression.

Performance Management (Appraisal). How do I negotiate my targets and measure impact?

Picture
The second year of teaching will involve becoming assimilated into the schools appraisal system. The resources on these pages support the appraisal and performance review process for teachers at Thomas Tallis School.  The system works in line with the new government guidelines and is underpinned by the new Teachers' Standards which were introduced in September 2012.

Key Pointers for this academic year 2013-14 include:
  • All teaching staff are encouraged to complete the self review form as this will support the review meeting being more purposeful.
  • Any staff applying for pay progression must complete the self review form.
  • Middle and Senior Leaders must have completed their review by 5th October 2013.
  • Staff applying for pay progression must complete their review by 12th October 2013.
  • Reviews for all staff must be completed by 26th October 2013.
  • All paperwork must be forwarded to Douglas Greig and Sue Bolton once it is completed.
